Web portals and news agencies: new threats to newspapers? The question will be explored at the third session of the 13th World Editors Forum, which begins June 4 in Moscow. New media mean new competition for newspapers. News aggregators lead readers to other sources and Internet companies produce original content. News agencies directly access the public though their websites, skipping the newspaper middleman. Neil Budde, General Manager, Yahoo! News, USA
Neil joined Yahoo! in November 2004, in this role, he oversees Yahoo!’s news initiatives, including the operations of Yahoo! News, and is responsible for ensuring that Yahoo! delivers the most timely and comprehensive news offerings online or offline. Before joining Yahoo!, Budde spent more than 25 years working for newspapers and online publishers. He was the founding editor and publisher of The Wall Street Journal Online and before that was deputy editorial director for Dow Jones News/Retrieval.
Google News and the free flow of information
Nathan Stoll, Google News Product Manager, Google Inc., USA
Nathan works at Google Inc. as the global product manager for Google News. In addition to Google News, his work includes a number of products available through Google.com and Google Labs, including Google Suggest. He holds degrees from Stanford University in Computer Science and Political Science and was a recipient of the Firestone Medal for excellence in research.

Google News gathers information from more than 10, 000 news sources worldwide, offering search over articles within minutes of publication on the web. Google News reflects the top stories being published on the web, it is entirely computer generated; there are no human editors. News articles about the same subject are grouped together, enabling readers to easily read many different perspectives.
Is there a future for press agencies in the new media landscape?

Before joining AFP in 2003, from 1989 to 1993 Pierre worked in the French General Accounting Office. From 1993 to 1995, he was adviser for communication, youth and sports to France’s Prime Minister. He helped launch the national Information Highways project – a precursor of the Internet. He was also founder and CEO from 1996 to 1999 of Connect World, an Internet communications agency within Havas Advertising.

AFP is the largest international news agency after Associated Press and Reuters. It employs 2,220 staff and about 2,000 freelancers, with 81 nationalities, working in 165 countries. AFP provides national and international news on all aspects of life to subscribers in six languages, its daily output varying between 400,000 and 600,000 words. Its photo and graphics service distribute 1,500 photographs and 50 graphics a day. AFP has more than 4,000 subscribers.

Dean joined Reuters in May 2005 as its first ever Managing Editor for Consumer Services, he leads the editorial operations and programming for Reuters consumer facing media services globally, including the online, mobile, and interactive television platforms. A media executive with over 30 years’ experience in journalism, Mr Wright joined Reuters from MSNBC.com where he served as Editor-in-Chief and Managing Editor for News. Previous to that role he was a Senior Director with America Online.
