Twitter reduces its mobile service, ends SMS update service

Twitter is cutting its mobile services in most parts of the world. The company is axing the programme that allowed users to receive Twitter updates via SMS.
However, Twitter users will be able to send updates to the service over SMS.
The service will continue as before in the US, Canada and India.
Twitter has laid the blame for this cut in service at the door of mobile operators. It says that costs had become too high for them to continue sending updates to every person on a user's subscriber list. According to Twitter, mobile operators had been unwilling to allow a reduced rate for the service. Negotiations are ongoing.
"When you send one message to Twitter and we send it to 10 followers, you are not charged 10 times because we've been footing the bill," the company said.
Twitter says in a blog on the subject that its costs can be as high a $1,000 per user outside the US, Canada and India.
Twitter recommends that users utilise their mobile browsers and access one of several mobile-optimised browser.
