UK: Trinty Mirror's hyperlocal experiment going national

Posted by Kelley Vendeland on March 12, 2008 at 2:12 PM
After a successful test run at the Teesside Gazette, Trinity Mirror is planning to expand nationally its network of hyperlocal community websites.

The project started with five local websites at the Gazette, before expanding to a total of 22 regional websites, each dealing with a separate post code.

Two similar sites are ready to launch in Coventry in April, with more to follow. Northumberland has also been discussed as a new location, reports The Guardian.

"We are now considering a roll out nationally. We will take exactly the same model and roll it out in the local areas," said Georgina Harvey, Trinity Mirror regionals managing director. "They are closer to the community than any newspaper could hope to achieve."

Hyperlocal news was recently targeted as one of the top ten most important trends in journalism.
