Google's OpenSocial Foundation to be created within 90 days
Posted by Carolyn Lo on March 26, 2008 at 2:26 PM
OpenSocial was introduced last year by Google to unify all social applications. Those implementing OpenSocial include Engage.com, Friendster, LinkedIn, MySpace, Oracle, orkut, and Plaxo.
Facebook will not be joining the foundation nor will it implement OpenSocial. A statement from the company said, "The company will continue to evaluate partnership opportunities that will benefit the 300,000 Facebook Platform developers while improving the Facebook user experience."
OpenSocial is possibly the stepping stone to opening up all social networks, thus Facebook may fear losing its users. Scott Karp of Publishing 2.0 writes, "All that differentiates Facebook for an individual user is the presence of that users friend's on Facebook -- which forces them to use Facebook to connect with them."
