US: New York Observer publisher launches new website for election coverage

Capitalizing on the current presidential election media craze in the United States, Jared Kushner, The New York Observer publisher, is planning to pull together 50 political websites, one from each state, into a political hub, Politicker.com, reports The New York Times.
“The site would serve as an intensely local source for political articles, speculation, and scandal,” Kushner said to The Times.
Ten sites are already online, and the 11th, based in Kentucky, is set to launch this week. Even in the project’s infancy, certain sites are outperforming others; some have already generated exclusive interviews with candidates while others are being criticized for updating too infrequently.
According to The Times, the company intends to use the format of PoliticsNJ.com, a guide to New Jersey politics purchased by Kushner last March, as a road map for the new Politicker sites.
At present, Politicker, owned by Observer Media Group, employs 30 people, including new managing editor James Pindell, a former political blogger at The Boston Globe. The company plans to generate content for each of the sites by hiring young journalists and sending them into the field.
“What the young reporters lack in experience, they make up for in passion about politics,” said Robert Summer, the president of Observer Media Group.
