Wikia Search to launch Jan. 7

Wikipedia founder Jimmy Wales plans to launch Wikia Search &#160, an open-source search project, on Jan. 7. Wikia Search will aim to eventually compete with the established search engine giants.

Technology enthusiasts and Wiki fans will be able to participate in the construction of the engine, by filtering sites and ranking search results, based on a model similar to Wikipedia.

Wales hopes that Wikia Search will draw users through its more transparent model, which shows users how they got to the search results.

As was the case for Wikipedia though, it will probably take some time for the service to develop, as more contributors and Wiki-fans join in.

China's media clampdown law is still in the proposal stage and the way things work in China, the longer it stays in that stage, and the more it is talked about, the less likely it is to be enacted. The silver lining in all of this is that this proposed law is increasing Chinese of the need for greater press freedom. If this law ends up not being enacted (and I think that is a real possibility) its proposal and subsequent failure will end up being a good thing for freedom of the press in China.
