Wikipedia founder Jimmy Wales has launched Wikia Search today, a search engine that allows members to rate results and improve the relevance of search results for other users.

Unlike Wikipedia, the service is ad-driven, and users can only submit recommendations by becoming members. Wikia Search is based on four principles including transparency, community, privacy and quality.

Creators of Wikia Search have acknowledged that it will take a minimum of two years before the service can produce results that will be as relevant as those of current search engine giants.

"Wikia's search engine concept is that of trusted user feedback from a community of users acting together in an open, transparent and public way,” said Wales.

"Of course, before we start we have no user feedback data, so the results are pretty bad. But we expect them to improve rapidly in coming weeks."
