US: WSJ.com to keep some content behind paywall

Posted by Jean Yves Chainon on January 25, 2008 at 1:27 PM
Rupert Murdoch stated yesterday at the World Economic Forum that he would not make all of WSJ.com free, contrarily to his initial desire to entirely remove the paywall.

The Wall Street Journal’s site recently increased its free offerings with video clips from Fox News, as well as giving free access to op-eds.

"We're sort of dividing it up," Murdoch said. "Those things that you can get more or less as a commodity on different sites about finance, that will certainly be free at the Wall Street Journal."

As one of the world’s most successful news subscriber site, changes in WSJ.com’s business model will certainly have repercussions on other paid-for sites.
