Bill Gates: entering the new digital era
“During the next digital decade, technology will make our lives richer, more connected, more productive and more fulfilling in profound and exciting ways,” said Gates.
He predicted that within ten years the consumer will enjoy high-definition experiences everywhere in daily life. And that conventional mice and keyboards would be replaced by touch, vision and speech-sensitive devices.
“Voice will be a natural way to search,” said Robbie Bach, Microsoft’s head of entertainment and devices.
“People are very interested in a simpler way of navigating information,” said Gates, who believes that information and data will be increasingly accessed remotely via the Internet, at anytime and from anywhere, instead of being kept on personal computers and servers.
“No longer will users have to be the bridge between devices,” said Gates. “You will be able to pick up any device, authenticate who you are, and you’ll have access to your information.”
Gates also announced Microsoft partnerships with news channel NBC, which will use Microsoft’s Silverlight to deliver live and on-demand video during the upcoming Beijing Olympics, as well as agreements with MGM, ABC and Disney to bring their films to the Xbox Live video on-demand platform.
Gates will step down from Microsoft this summer to focus on his work at the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.

Somebody ought to tell Denmark's 365 Media that Anschutz's door-to-door distribution hasn't been that successful, and he's scaled it back due to an avalanche of complaints from homeowners who don't want unsolicited newspapers piling up on their driveways.
Here's a story about what happened in Washington: http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A26672-2005Apr4.html
Also, it seems the Washington Examiner only reaches the white parts of the District of Columbia, according to research by Washington's City Paper. (Here's a link to a blog which summarized the City Paper story http://www.zenlala.com/index.php/weblog/catching_up_on_the_news/ The City Paper archive charges users to read the article.)
In San Francisco, Anschutz's people haven't done the circulation audits they promised when they began door-to-door delivery a couple of years ago. Speculation is that they've cut back due to complaints.
