UK: Independent to relaunch Website

The Independent's Website is to relaunch soon, with new features including improved search, navigation and more video.
"We really just want to improve what we've got. There are no pictures, no multimedia and it's not what you expect from a newspaper website," said Ruth Metzstein, the Independent's multimedia editor.

"We'll also be putting all the content from the newspaper online rather than most of it. But the first thing is to make it work better,” she added.

The newspaper site has also been experimenting with a "best of the Indy" feature, highlighting stories across the sections.

The paid-for model to some of its premium content on the site, including the archive and columns by Robert Fisk, has been ended, relying on advertising, sponsorship and affiliate programs to fund the site instead.

Web measurement firm Nielsen Online estimates that Independent.co.uk attracted 580,000 unique users in the UK during October, while Guardian Unlimited was estimated to have 3.17 million, the Telegraph 2.4 million and Times Online 2.06 million.
