Nielsen to launch copyright protection system on Web
Posted by Evan Fell on December 6, 2007 at 12:42 PM
Nielsen, a company best known for rankings of TV programming, have announced plans to develop a copyright protection system for the Internet.
The system would police Web sites for copyrighted material, and notify site owners and content providers when video has been posted without authorization.
The system is being developed in partnership with Digimarc, a provider of digital watermarking technology.
The system would use technology already used by Nielsen in the services it sells to advertisers and TV networks.
At first, the system would be used for policing the use of TV programs, which often have clips posted on user-generated content sites. Very much of this content is uploaded without authorization or compensation to the content provider, which has led to tension between Internet companies and Hollywood studios, which Nielson hopes its system will diffuse.
