Google takes on wikipedia

Search giant Google, after Wikipedia’s success, is about to launch its own online encyclopaedia, “Knol”.
Google’s user-generated and user-edited encyclopaedia will provide its users “easy editing tools” and ensure these entries get a well-ranked place in Google's search results.
Moreover, authors’ names will be highlighted so that users can click on them to access their profile.
"Books have authors' names right on the cover, news articles have bylines, scientific articles always have authors – but somehow the web evolved without a strong standard to keep authors names highlighted. We believe that knowing who wrote what will significantly help users make better use of web content," said Udi Manber, vice president of engineering for Google.
According to Manber, Knol will cover all topics, from scientific concepts to how-to-fix instructions. He also acknowledged that Google will not be able to guarantee that all entries are of the highest quality, with
completely open levels of participation.
The encyclopaedia in in its first phase of testing and can be used on an invitation-only basis.
