Yahoo’s Flickr to map photos around the world

Flickr, Yahoo Inc’s online photo sharing site, is introducing a new mapping feature to its site that makes it possible to track the day’s millions of photo submissions based on their location.
The new service, called Places, will be an easier way for Web browsers to search for photos based on their geographical location. Flickr uses a global map to show users the latest hot spots for photo uploads. Most cities, states, countries, and regions have their own pages on the site.  The global map also lets users see the photos by theme.

The service enables users, and possibly traditional media, to track users’ most recent interests and hot spots.

The three and a half year old site has ore than 40 million visitors per month and two billion photos stored on the site. Between 2.5 and 3 million new photos are uploaded daily.
