Survey: News executives report that within 3 years 40% of content will be user generated

A survey by Polopoly reports that European newspaper executives believe that within three years 40% of their content will be user-generated. The survey reported that blogs will become more important, personalized advertising will be more possible, and the Internet will continue to grow in importance.
When asked if having a large staff was important, most respondents said they would prefer a small staff complemented by user generated content and believe that in the future there is a place for communities such as MySpace and Facebook. These types of communities along with blogs have created a sort of ‘balance of power’ between consumers and companies that did not exist previously.

Regarding ads, a majority of the respondents believe that more than 50 per cent of their advertising revenue will come from the Internet within five years. Targeted ads will have something to do with that large number, which according to Executives at Fox Interactive Media, owners of MySpace, increase the likelihood of a user clicking on the ad by 80%. MySpace has already launched its model for personalized ads.

Still, the majority of respondents reported that they do not think the printed newspaper will lose its place as the primary news source anytime in the near future.

About the survey:
In connection with the annual media event Ifra Expo in Vienna, Polopoly sent out a survey to 3,000 European media executives to find out how they view the market and its future.
