ABC News partners with Facebook

A formal partnership has been announced between Facebook and ABC News. This is Facebook’s first partnership with a news site. The partnership has created a U.S. politics category on Facebook, which allows members to electronically follow ABC reporters, view reports and video, as well as participate in polls and debates.
Other news organizations have looked to capitalize on Facebook, such as The New York Times and the Washington Post, both of whom have produced pages for use on Facebook. ABC however has a partnership that will go further than that.
David Westin, president of ABC News and a new Facebook user said, “There are debates going on at all times within Facebook. This allows us to participate in those debates, both by providing information and by learning from the users.”
“If you’re ABC News, your content can spread virally through all these friend networks,” said Steve Outing, an interactive media columnist for Editor & Publisher magazine.
The collaboration between ABC and Facebook started several weeks ago, with the addition of personal pages of reporters like Rick Klein and Sunlen Miller. The partnership will encourage users to interact directly with reporters via their personal pages on Facebook rather than write a comment or e-mail to a generalized e-mail address like before.
Around 250 users have already signed up to follow Sunlen Miller, who is covering Barack Obama and a 50 second clip of flags falling down behind Hillary Clinton at a campaign appearance, recorded by reporter Eloise Harper has been viewed over 350,000 times on ABCNews.com and Facebook.
