UK: Guardian and Observer to open online paid-for archive

Posted by Jean Yves Chainon on October 16, 2007 at 9:46 AM
Guardian News and Media is to make its entire archives available online as a paid-for service. Over 1.2 million pages of content will be open to the public in November.

Starting on Nov. 3, users can access articles from the Guardian from 1821 to 1975 and from The Observer from 1900 to 1975.

Users can subscribe to the service, which will be offered for free 24-hour access through November.

The archive will be searchable and provide exact replicas of the original newspapers, which can be viewed in full or per article.

This will also help to ensure the preservation of the paper’s archives, as the state of microfilm and paper copies increasingly degrade.
