Nokia and Reuters launch new project

Nokia and Reuters are working on a project that could transform the way journalists file news in the field. The new application will facilitate and speed up the publication of stories coming from journalists on the move.

After collaborating on long-term research, Nokia Research Center (NRC) and Reuters have showcased their first project. NRC and Reuters have created a new mobile application, a lightweight toolkit, which gives journalists everything they need to file and publish news from the most remote regions of the world,

Reuters journalists have trialed the application this summer and have already begun to use it. The device can be used to file text, images, sound and live and recorded video stream and to produce multi-media stories of broadcast quality without having to return to the office. Reuters has also developed a mobile editorial interface that links the toolkit to the in-house editorial process. This allows stories to be published almost instantly from the field.

“This is a very easy to use application that takes account of the demands place on journalists in the field,” said Nic Fulton, Chief Scientist of Reuters Media.

The immediate application of this device will be aimed at professional journalists, however the research could have much wider implications in the future. Timo Koskinen, project manager with Nokia Research Center, said: "The term 'citizen journalism' has been in use for several years, but technological innovations - particularly the introduction of mobile multimedia computers - have transformed the concept. 'Citizen journalism' is beginning to embrace a wide range of public engagement with the media, from groups of contributors organized around subject or geographic areas to the casual participation of observers who are lucky - or unlucky - enough to be at the scene of a newsworthy event."
