El Pais plans for changes to attract young and global readership

In an aim to gain a younger audience and become a global newspaper, El Pais has decided to have a makeover. This Sunday El Pais will reveal a new format.
International, national and economic news will be in a single section. According to Editor-in-chief Javier Moreno, there will be more graphics, more photos and certain articles will be cut. "We need to connect with the generations who will become the backbone of this country in the next 15 or 20 years," said Moreno.
El Pais plans on additional changes with the aim to increase readership outside of Spain. According to Spain’s monitory agency OJD, El Pais has a 10% foreign readership, selling 40,000 copies outside of Spain. Argentina and Mexico make-up the majority of foreign sales. With the aim of increasing their market in Latin America, El Pais will increase the number of foreign correspondents in the region. An expansion of El Pais’ website is also expected. Today 780,00 readers visit the paper’s website daily. 20 percent of the readers come from outside of Spain.
Moreno told foreign correspondents in Madrid Tuesday "The ultimate aim is to become a global newspaper, a bit like the Herald Tribune, which has no base in a particular country.”
