Wikipedia to launch human search engine

Posted by Jean Yves Chainon on September 3, 2007 at 11:38 AM
Wikipedia founder Jimmy Wales plans to launch Wikia Search in December, to eventually compete against automated search giants such as Google and Yahoo. The concept seems sound but it’s hard to imagine at this point that Wikia could become a real rival.

Wales describes the search engine giants’ results as “editorial” – whether automated or not.

“People think of search as some kind of computer function but it’s really editorial – it’s journalism. If I type ‘Martha Stewart’ into a search engine and I get 10 results back, those results are an editorial judgment whether or not it’s made by a computer.”

From that perspective, Wales believe it is a concern “when we have only two or three sources for that editorial judgment.”

Unlike Wikipedia, Wikia Search will be for-profit. So the motivations of Wikia’s contributors could be different from the hundreds of ‘uninterested’ workers who edit the online encyclopedia. It’s also unclear how the human-powered search engine will provide efficient results – different from their relevance.

According to Danny Sullivan, editor-in-chief of Search Engine Land, a trade website, crowd-powered search engines won’t beat Google. “Wikipedia is a destination site. Search isn’t a destination,” he said.
