Hid-Def video soon online, YouTube starts embedded ads

Google has begun inserting overlay ads within YouTube videos, just as Adobe has released its latest version (nine) of Flash Player, which potentially enables high-definition video on the Web.
YouTube’s new ads will appear as translucent, graphic overlays and animations on professionally produced videos, as well as some user-generated videos.
Compared to traditional advertising, YouTube product manager Shashi Seth said these ads had a higher response rate. Up to 75% of users watched the ad until the end.
Advertisers will be charged $20 per 1,000 views, regardless of whether the user clicks on the ad. Video owners can choose to decline specific ads or all ads, and will share part of the revenue with YouTube.
This new format for online video advertising could be a major step, as publishers have been struggling to find a user-friendly and lucrative way to monetize video advertising.
It wouldn’t be a surprise if newspaper websites, which are placing a lot of emphasis on online video, were soon trying overlay ads.
YouTube’s InVideo ads come just as Adobe released version nine of its Flash Player. If the new player truly allows high-definition for online videos, and with an efficient format to monetize them, this could lead to major changes in the online news landscape.
