US: VeohTV shows online video in TV format

Posted by Mica Swyers on July 17, 2007 at 1:20 PM
Veoh Networks, the San Francisco-based online video company, has plans to release its  “VeohTV” software that would allow users to watch online video without the constraints of a browser.

Currently in the testing phase, VeohTV takes streaming online video already available on the Web and plays it in a window or full-screen on a computer monitor.

Many media companies such as YouTube are closely eyeing VeohTV’s developments to see if it will disrupt the current business model.  Although Veoh’s chief executive Dmitry Shapiro insists that VeohTV only facilitates consumption of already existing video, some companies argue that its format allows readers to bypass the embedded advertisements in the hosting Web pages.

VeohTV is set for public release later in 2007.  In its current form, it could provide users with a quicker way to access the streaming video that newspapers are so eager to include in their Web content.
