Designing the homepage: about load times
The longest load time went to the Wall Street Journal, at 954 kb with ads (767 kb without).
The New York Times carries the most sizeable ads, with 221 kb devoted to that category (655 kb total for the homepage).
All the other major papers had comparable load times, roughly between 700 and 900 kb.
Only the Houston Chronicle had a ‘lighter’ design adapted to dial-up, 205 kb, nearly half of which was devoted to ads.
