US: Boston Globe’s new daily, musical, news video

Posted by Jean Yves Chainon on May 10, 2007 at 10:52 AM
The Boston Globe’s website, Boston.com, has launched ‘Pop-Ed,’ a daily music video clip inspired by the news of the day. A local artist, Jake Brennan, will compose the music and video, which will be complemented by an interactive blog.

Brennan is a three-time winner of the Boston Music Awards.

Visitors to the website will be able to submit their Pop-Ed lyrics or even full music videos for Brennan to rework. They can also send any feedback on the daily music videos.

The first installment of Pop-Ed is available on Boston.com through May 18. After the first two-week run, Brennan will use verses from the submitted lyrics to create a musical clip.

Sounds like a relatively low-cost addition that could bring some hype back to newspaper websites and attract young and old users alike. This is also an innovative example of a nearly textless, multimedia, feature offered by newspapers.
