Media General experimenting with video and RSS

Media General is experimenting with Web 2.0 features. In particular, it is testing video and RSS news feed features using Vmix and NewsGator on the Richmod Times-Dispatch website, which will, if successful, likely be spread among its 75 online enterprises after the experimentation phase.

The Vmix technology allows Times-Dispatch to share videos with readers and readers to share their own videos. A move that would allow Media General to monetize a larger number of web pages according to Jennifer Juckett, vice president of marketing and business development for Vmix.

Walker Fenton, general manager of syndication services at NewsGator outlines the reasons for the popularity of his company’s technology: "Mainstream publishers are starting to recognize and appreciate the perspective of other publishers, and this technology is allowing them to present that to the users around a specific story or topic."

Should the results of this experimentation be positive Media General will be ready to benefit from rolling out these technologies on its 75 online enterprises.

Whether the results are positive or negative, Media General’s willingness to experiment with new technologies is certainly positive and an example for news companies.
