Citizen journalism and local news: How the Chi Town Daily News is going to spend its $340,000
The Chi Town Daily News, a local news site, recently received $340,000 from the Knight Foundation. The Daily News is planning to use the money to recruit, train, and deploy volunteer journalists who will report on Chicago’s 70+ neighborhoods, an idea which truly embraces citizen journalism and local news.
The Daily News will be hiring a community outreach specialist, with more to come later. These specialists will be showing up at local events, such as block committee meetings, neighborhood Chamber of Commerce events, churches and festivals to discuss writing for the Daily News with citizens.
The goal is to have at least one journalist for each neighborhood. To test the project, two or three-dozen neighborhoods will be targeted along the lakefront at the outset. Once some journalists are signed up, editors will be hired to work with, and train, the volunteers.
