US: publishers delve into environmental ventures

As Earth Day approaches, several US newspapers and publications have launched environmentally-friendly websites and features. As Green increasingly becomes an issue for investors and companies, newspapers seem to be tapping into the market.

Washington.Newsweek Interactive has launched Sprig, a shopping site that provides a range of eco-friendly products. The website also provides some news coverage and user-generated content.

National Geographic is to launch Green.NationalGeographic.com, after the company acquired TheGreenGuide.com last month. The latest website will include news about the environment, as well as practical videos and tips for users to travel and live in environment-friendly ways.

Publisher Hearst also launched TheDailyGreen.com, which serves both to help users be more respectful of their environment and as a social networking website.

Whether these websites are truly to safeguard the planet or whether they simply play into the public’s increasing concern for the environment, there certainly is a growing audience and news relevance for Green-oriented ventures. Up to newspapers to incorporate this into their array of offerings.
