US: NYTimes launches Times Reader

Posted by Lindsay Berrigan on April 2, 2007 at 2:31 PM
The New York Times last week launched the public version of its Times Reader program, designed to give users a comfortable, print-like reading experience that easily reformats papers to different screen sizes.

Times Reader lets users download the most recent version of the NYTimes.com paper, downloading the newest stories every 30 minutes. Readers can then view the paper, formatted much like a print newspaper, on any computer or mobile device. Readers can save articles to their hard drives, search, annotate, and highlight easily. Further, unlike PDF readers, Times Reader does not require users to scroll through stories, but rather use arrow keys.

With Times Reader, readers gain access to Times Select content and Premium (current daily) Crosswords.

“What we're trying to accomplish with Times Reader is create a really delightful, natural reading experience on a screen," said Robert Larson, vice president for product development. “This packages everything the way a newspaper packages everything. It's contained and extremely easy to navigate."

The program is free for seven-day Times print subscribers. Alone, it costs $165 per year or $15 a month. New subscribers get a 30-day free trial period, and the paper is looking into offering pay-by-the-day service.

Times Reader supports photos but not video, which is another development in the works. Currently, the program is only available for Windows XP and Vista. The Times plans to have a Mac version later this year.

Larson said that the New York Times Co. is planning to create similar programs for its Boston Globe and International Herald Tribune.

Of course, Times Co. will first have to be assured of the success of Times Reader. There has been much debate over whether people will pay $15 a month to read, in a different format, what they can mostly get for free online. The success of Times Select paid online content has been negligible, but Larson remains optimistic.

“For those who want free, we have a great Web site for you,” he said, “but this format is for people wanting more of a print experience."

I'm a therapeutic recretion specialist at Isabella Nursing Home in Washington Heights in upper Manhattan (515 Audubon Avenue & 525 Audubon Avenue buildings, New York, NY 10040). About 3 months (or more) ago I had requested that your company provide Isabella residents with this newspaper and deliveries were made on fridays to bother buildins (100 copies each ) which were then distributed to the residents on the various floors for their reading pleasure. for the past 6 weeks i've noticed that no more deliveries have been made and that a newspaper bin was place on the street across from Isabella which i guess is for the community to also have the pleasure of reading HOY as well. he problem with this is that the kids turn the bin, destroy/burn the newspapers inside it, etc. and the newspapers are not used/read by those who are interested. please be so kind as to resume your weekly delivery to Isabella as initially agreed upon. Should you need to get in contact with me you can do as at 212/342-9450 or via mail. thank you.
