El Pais promotes citizen journalism

Posted by Manuel Mantilla on April 24, 2007 at 10:24 AM

The Spanish online news site, ELPAIS.com, has launched a new section for citizen journalism. “Yo periodista” is an interactive section in which citizens can publish news at any time.

The readers can send texts, photos, videos and other type of documents for the different sections. “Yo periodista” is divided into two sections: one for general news, citizen accomplishments, accidents, and natural disasters and another one for photos, themes of urbanism, international, elections 2007, local government problems, environment and education.

Readers can contribute through the internet or through a mobile service, by sending the word ‘Pais’ to the number 7750.

The information has to be written in a clear way. The news has to be true and can’t be libelous. The information is controlled by a group of specialized journalists from ELPAIS.com. They supervise the quality and type of information.

Still, ELPAIS.com is the fist newspaper in Spain to open a news space dedicated specially to readers and citizens.
