Austria: Daily blurs line between newspapers and magazines

Posted by Lindsay Berrigan on April 25, 2007 at 3:38 PM
Österreich, an Austrian daily launched in late 2006, mixes newspaper and magazine in both content and style.

Österreich is a full-color compact consisting of a 40-page national section, two 24-page regional sections (both printed on newsprint) and two 16-page magazine-like sections. The glossy sections are not like “magazine-style” inserts in normal dailies but rather daily sections just like others in the paper. In doing this, Österreich and its printing partners developed a printing process that allows for both hot and cold set processes during the same run.

The glossy pages allow the paper to attract luxury advertisers, who insist on magazine quality for their ads.

Gert Edlinger, the managing director of Osterreich, will discuss the innovative format and content strategy at the World Newspaper Congress, to be held in Cape Town, South Africa June 3 to 6. Click here for more info.

FYI - just to clarify what was stated in the above entry v.s. what was meant by my original comment. I am in favor of 'scooping yourself' and always have been. We in fact did not have an 'argument' about posting a story early - we had what is a common discussion in many newsrooms about the specifics of posting early in a specific case.

As there is small justification to wait in most cases, the discussion was in fact brief. It was only after I discovered the news had been broken earlier on a community bulletin board that we realized how pointless even our passing thoughts of holding back the 'news' were.

thanks
