US: Newspapers increase sales with pleasant scent?

Posted by Jean Yves Chainon on February 1, 2007 at 2:47 PM
The Wall Street Journal and USA Today are working on ‘scented ads’ with specialized company Scentisphere. These ads can be applied as ink on print platforms, and are viewed by ‘scratching and sniffing’.
While the process has been around for a long time, Scentisphere’s says its technology makes it much cheaper to produce scented ads and doesn’t require a special printing process.

"With our technology the scented capsules go right into the printing press," said Bob Bernstein, president of Scentisphere.

He claims scented ads can increase product sales by 25%. Scent is reportedly the strongest memory trigger. Neither USA Today nor WSJ have disclosed when they would publish the ads, but they should be available shortly.
