US: Full-time news site seeks volunteers
Posted by Jean Yves Chainon on January 3, 2007 at 4:15 PM
The Baltimore Bulldog, an interactive news site, is to be launched this spring. News content will combine citizen journalism, blogging and professional reporting, but most of the work will be based on volunteers.
The Bulldog will report on local news and include the full range of contemporary multimedia platforms. Among its staff and contributors, Fern Shen, former reporter for The Washington Post and Baltimore Sun, and Marc Steiner, a public radio host on WYPR.
Local bloggers and influential voices will also participate in columns and news coverage.
The interactive Bulldog will go as far as posting “instant restaurant reviews” – customers’ appreciation of a local restaurant sent through mobile phone text messages.
The Baltimore Bulldog is conceived as a non-profit, and its regular staff has offered to work for free – initially. Participatory journalism may seem like a concern to some publishers, but at least it’s creating an authentic feeling of community for others.
