Here’s another tip to easily increase both your audience and your knowledge of their likes: produce daily reports ranking the web hits generated by your stories, so you’ll know exactly what the readers want to read and what they don’t.
The Sacramento Bee started doing just that, as announced in a memo to staff by Rick Rodriguez, its executive editor, on Jan. 16.
“We will not allow web traffic statistics to dictate story play in the newspaper. However, the statistics are one of many considerations the online editors use in determining placement of stories on the web.”
“I can't emphasize enough how important it is for all of us to understand and embrace the delivery of news online. This is part of everyone's job now and sharing the story readership online is just one small step that I hope will help underscore our online responsibilities.”
