France: Les Echos to launch e-paper edition
“We’ll be ready in April, maybe March,” said Philippe Jeannet, the online editor.
“The e-paper edition of Les Echos will give access to print and online articles, market valuations, a word index, podcasts. Some content will be preloaded on a memory card.”
The daily’s business plan is primarily based on subscription revenue, although the e-paper edition will probably carry some ads.
The cost of the e-paper reader combined with a yearly subscription should be around 500 euros. The paper is also considering how to provide service for people equipped with an eBook or who wish to only download the day’s edition.
“It’s a winner-winner model. The increased cost is minimal for subscribers, who already pay 416 euros a year for the print version, and for the publisher, who now only has to spend 55 euro cents for each copy,” said Jeannet.
The e-paper revolution is truly on its way this time, and other major newspapers will probably pick up on it in the months to come.
