US: Changes in local online advertising

Posted by Allie Judson on December 1, 2006 at 11:33 AM
At the Kelsey Local Interactive Media Conference in Philadelphia, local newspapers and online groups discussed the future of local news websites. Executives at the conference decided that local sites have the ability to better work with their market in comparison to current portals and advertising networks.
According to statistics found by Shawn Riegsecker, Centro CEO, newspapers take up 18% of offline ad spending but only 4% online. According to Centro the low online number is because of newspaper’s advertising strategy, using geo-targeting through portals and networks.

He suggests that online newspapers use their local market to find advertising dollars. By finding advertisers looking to specifically target a local audience, more regional papers can find the most fitting ads.

Another way to do this is adding user-generated content, not in the traditional citizen journalism sense, but by encouraging community classifieds. This not only ads a new kind of advertisement to the website but increases citizen involvement bringing more traffic to the site creating a more enticing environment for advertisers.
