France launches its own 24/7 news channel

France 24, launched today Dec. 5th, will be the first French news channel to air 24/7. Two channels – one in French and the other mostly in English – will be broadcast. The programs include reports, talk shows, news magazines and bi-hourly news bulletins.
"Our mission is to cover worldwide news with French eyes," said CEO Alain de Pouzilhac. Initial coverage will extend to 75 million households in over 90 countries in Europe, Middle East and Africa, and should expand to North America and Asia in the near future.

France 24 could offer a “third way” according to Pouzilhac, an alternative to the bipolar discourse by Anglo-Saxon BBC World and CNN on one hand and Middle Eastern Al-Jazeera on the other.
