US: Campus newspapers attract advertisers

Though many newspapers seem to be experiencing circulation declines, college newspapers are reportedly reaching 76% of their target audiance. Advertisers have taken notice that there is a captive and untapped audience regularly thumbing through their local college paper.
Campus papers have remained at the same readership rate for their demographic, never dropping below 60%, during the past two decades. These groups of students, who are preparing to make some large purchase decisions such as a car, house, or computer, are the perfect group for advertisers to target.
Along with advertisers, large companies are trying to tap into these ultra local publications. Publishing business Viacom has even bought College Publisher, which runs websites for 450 college papers across the country. Students "have a massive amount of buying power," said Jason Bakker, marketing director at Campus Media Group.
