US: Audio news at Washington Times

Posted by Rory Satran on October 4, 2006 at 4:18 PM

The Washington Times now translates 95% of its online content into audio files.  All of its staff-written and some AP articles are now available for download as MP3 files that can later be listened to through iPods or other readers.

Articles are automatically converted into a robotic voice.  The service is provided through News Worthy Audio.

David Eldridge, managing editor of the paper, sees the service as being helpful for commuters and those who don’t have time to sit down with the paper: “For a town as full of busy people and news-junkies as [Washington D.C.] it's very useful."

Internet director Bob Adkins presents the resource as a response to reader demand. "People are drifting away from print and they want their information across several platforms," he said.

Jemima Kiss at Paid Content spewed some major venom on the project:  “It’s not just that the computer-generated voice is extremely grating - the language of audio news has a different structure, pace and dynamic to written news that this kind of repurposing doesn’t appreciate.”

It’s true that the robotic voice does not compare with Larry King.  However, after a trial run we have concluded that the quality is wholly listenable as a second-choice medium.  If you have time to sit down with the paper (or your laptop), by all means do so.  Otherwise, load up your iPod.

Your Editor Ms Simmons went on to C-SAPN and said Rev Dr King did not come out agains the Vietnam War and would not.

Amazing ignorance!? I marched with him and with his wife. Dr King lead a march of 1 and 1/2 million in New York in Spring 1967 against the War and he never stopped speaking out against it once he came out against it.
