Online social networking: next generation portal potential or flash-in-the-pan?
That’s the question of the moment at the Piper Jaffray Global Internet Summit in California, where speakers and attendees are debating the merits of sites like MySpace and Facebook. A CNET article reports on the sites’ prospects at becoming major portals, as discussed at the conference.

- MySpace offers users a wide range of services to rival major portals. These include e-mail, instant messaging and blog services, as well as jobs, video, book and music stores.
- MySpace generates more monthly traffic than MSN or AOL. Its figures are about 75 percent of Yahoo’s, the most heavily trafficked Web site.
- Eighty percent of MySpace users are older than 18.
- Young users are starting to say they have outgrown MySpace. While many college students are members of Facebook, the site may be due to hit its peak as well.
- Advertisers are wary of investing too heavily in sites like MySpace, not wanting to form brand associations with unregulated, potentially risqué content.
