Egypt: Man continues blog from jail cell
Posted by Maddie Hanna on May 31, 2006 at 10:51 AM
Arrested in May during a demonstration in Cairo, Alaa Abdel-Fattah, one of the most popular pro-democracy voices in Egypt, is continuing to blog from his jail cell by sending postings via cell phone, the Associated Press reported Tuesday.
The blog, Manalaa, has won readers across the country — and even around the world — as an alternative to Egypt’s state-run media. An important part of a growing political countermovement, the blog announces upcoming demonstrations, exposes government misdeeds and gives technical support to more than 1,000 blogs in the emerging Egyptian blogosphere.
Abdel-Fattah runs the blog with wife Manal Hassan. They began posting two years ago in a mixture of Arabic and English.
