Comic strips rely too much on old readers
As fewer young people are picking up newspapers, fewer of them are reading cartoons in newspapers. Cartoonists believe that newspapers, who aren’t adopting to younger audiences in print, need to change to reach a print-averse younger generation.
Comic strip writers are attributing the problem to how newspapers choose their comic strip lineup, putting too much emphasis on the opinions of aging readers. As a result, comics like “Blondie,” which has been around since the 1930s, and “Peanuts” are still permanent fixtures on comics pages. But these “classic” comics also are believed to retain readers.
"I don't think you'll ever see another 'Calvin & Hobbes,' 'Bloom County' or 'Doonesbury' again," says Breathed, who received the Pulitzer Prize for editorial cartooning in 1987. "The popularity of those strips was built on a young audience — great comic strips are not built on the backs of aging readers."Breathed believes the only way to adjust to younger readers is for newspapers to rethink how they present visual entertainment to these potential readers.
"The idea of one page of smudgy little cartoons as the entertainment in a newspaper is so outdated, so circa 1925," he says. "Newspapers should have pages of dynamic visual drawing along with serial novels or extended graphic storytelling.”
