US: Independent city websites pose a threat to newspapers
Borrell Associates recently published a report in the US entitled 'Independent City Sites Gain Steam: A New Threat to Old Media", which highlights the threat that such websites pose to newspapers. The report states that independent city sites are growing quickly and "elbowing in on territory that traditional local media properties have been trying to stake out for the past decade."
Houston.com and many others sites using US city names can attract traffic even without advertising given that many internet users search the web by typing proper nouns into url fields. The content of these sites generally concentrates on night life, entertainment and travel, and little coverage is given to local news.
Annual revenues for the city sites have reached one million dollars and above, at a time when "the newspaper industry ... continues to struggle with profit margins and circulation."
Regional newspapers might be wise to partner with such sites, filling the gap of local reporting that they leave while backing their own content with local lifestyle news.
