World Press Freedom Day

By WAN-IFRA

Free the press! It is a familiar refrain, one that grows louder year-on-year yet never loses relevancy. Why should a free press even be up for discussion? Are we failing to get the message across?

The simple answer is that the press equals power, and wherever power lies there are those who seek to control or influence it. By nature, a free press is untamed; capable of speaking unfiltered to public opinion, it has always been a vital conduit for free expression.

It has therefore been a constant target.

As we increasingly embrace our digital citizenship, the tyrants who oppose free speech are quickly learning how to act as digital oppressors. Targets are more numerous, attacks more complicated and diverse. Our awareness and vigilance must adjust with similar voracity.

Impunity for the killers of journalists extends also to those who murder bloggers. Censorship does not discriminate between editorial platforms. Prisons are built for those who “offend”, regardless of media.

It is impossible to prevent the oppressors of free speech from eroding our basic freedoms. And they do, as the press freedom indexes show, frequently and without heed for the consequences.

Today, World Press Freedom Day, is a day to celebrate the journalists among us who refuse to stay silent: journalists such as Mexico’s Anabel Hernández.

Death threats and intimidation have failed to stop Ms Hernández exposing the links between drug cartels and organised crime, business, police and government. Mexico is now one of the most dangerous and violent parts of the world for journalists to work in, and her brave investigative reporting on corruption and abuse of power in her country won Ms Hernández the 2012 Golden Pen of Freedom, a global prize for defending the right to freedom of expression presented by the World Association of Newspapers and News Publishers.

Today we salute journalists, editors, cartoonists, photographers and the increasing number of citizen journalists who make a noise despite great risk to their personal safety: those who won’t yield to intimidation.

“Corruption grows through silence,” warns Hernández. “If journalists of my generation keep silent, if we give up our work for fear or complicity, journalists after us will be condemned to kneel to this corruption.” She hopes to stay alive to continue to investigate and document Mexico’s drug cartels.

WAN-IFRA’s flagship press freedom campaign, 3 May World Press Freedom Day, looks to highlight the critical importance of an issue that lies at the very heart of our industry: freedom of expression.

Without this freedom, our democratic societies lose their very essence and become un-worthy of the name. The freedom to criticize and hold those in power to account is a right that a free press – by its very existence – upholds daily in every corner of the globe. This right underpins all of our most valued human rights, and the ability of a free press to ensure that our voices are heard should be vigorously defended wherever it is threatened.

WAN-IFRA’s 3 May World Press Freedom Day campaign is designed to aid newspapers in engaging with their readers to celebrate freedom of expression and explore the issues that jeopardize this most basic of human rights.

In the lead up to 3 May we provide members with a range of materials to stimulate debate, including opinion pieces penned by prominent global figures, exclusive artwork and cartoons, striking photographs selected in conjunction with Agence France-Presse (AFP), and infographics that reveal the sobering reality facing journalists, editors and publishers around the world in their ongoing struggle for a free and independent press.
