Storyful is, according to Founder and CEO Mark Little, “the first news agency for the social media age:" it sources news content from the "real-time web," authenticates it, and delivers it to an influential roster of clients, including The New York Times and the Economist.

Part tech start-up, part news agency, it is powered by a small team of professional journalists scattered around the globe – from Dublin to San Francisco and Hong Kong – who work as social media “field producers,” using a combination of algorithms and human skill to pick up early warning signals of breaking news, pinpoint sources on the ground, decide which tweets, photos and videos are “actionable,” and feed this verified social content to their publishing partners.

If you’re an American news organization transitioning toward a digital future, you would do well to take a close look at your mobile presence.

Over half (55 percent) of adults in the United States who own cell phones are using them to go online as of April 2012, according to a new Pew study, reported Nieman Lab.

Given that 88 percent of US adults now own cell phones, this means that 49 percent of the country’s adult population browses the web on a mobile phone, at least from time to time.

Now consider that 74 percent of cell phone web users go online on a typical day; so each “typical day,” 41 percent of all US cell phone users are entering a hand-held, online universe at least once.

This is only the beginning. The survey also shows that a large and increasing proportion of these “cell Internet users” are doing most of their browsing on cell phones, rather than on computers or tablets. These are called “cell-mostly Internet users,” and they represent 31 percent of cell Internet users— a proportion that grows to 45 percent in the 18-29 age bracket.

A national phone survey conducted by the Pew Research Center’s Project for Excellence in Journalism and Internet & American Life Program found that the majority of adult Americans habitually follow local news. According to the report, 72% of the 2,251 adults surveyed said they follow local news “most of the time, whether or not something important is happening” while 25% said they follow local news closely “only when something important is happening.” Three percent did not respond.

Of the 72% of adults labeled “local news enthusiasts,” 32% said the disappearance of their local newspaper would have a “major impact” on their lives, while 34% said they would feel “no impact at all” the report said. In contrast, 19% of adults who do not follow local news closely said the disappearance of their local newspaper would have a major impact, while 51% said it would have no impact, the report said.

The survey also found that local news followers age 40 and above were most likely to report that the disappearance of their local paper would have a major impact on their lives (35%), though younger readers were not far behind (26%).

According to the 2012 annual State of News Media report, more Americans than ever own and receive news from smartphones and tablet computers, the Pew Research Center reported.

A survey of 3,000 adults conducted by the Pew Research Center’s Project for Excellence in Journalism found that 44% of people over 18 now own a smartphone, while 18% of adults own tablets—a 50% increase in tablet usage from the summer of 2011.

The survey found that, of the majority of Americans who own a desktop or laptop computer, more than half also own a smartphone. In addition, it found that almost a third of smartphone owners also own a tablet. Overall, 13% of the adults surveyed owned all three devices.

 

The survey also asked participants about their smartphone and tablet behaviors, discovering that about half of smartphone owners and more than half of tablet owners use their respective devices to get digital news.
