Senior executive director of the London Evening Standard Evgeny Lebedev announced via Twitter on Friday that Sarah Sands is the new editor of the free local daily newspaper, according to The Guardian.

Lebedev tweeted, “proud to announce Sarah Sands is new #Standard Editor. Sure she and her brilliant staff will do a great job in a huge year for the paper.”

Sands, previously deputy editor, will succeed Geordie Greig, who resigned from the Standard to edit the Mail on Sunday, the article said.

Sands is one of few women in the UK who hold senior newspaper positions. As we previously reported, a recent study by Women in Journalism found that 8 of 10 leading UK newspapers had half as many female editors as male editors.

The Guardian reported that Sands initially intended to follow Greig as deputy editor of the Mail on Sunday, but reconsidered after many voiced support in her favor, including London mayor Boris Johnson.

The London Evening Standard and The Independent have announced a merger that will crate joint business and sports desks shared between the two publications. Independent staff will head the sports desk up while London Evening Standard writers will man the business desk.

The merger is an effort to economise in response to the increasingly difficult financial situation faced by the majority of print newspapers - including these two titles, that are published by Independent Print Ltd. and owned by the Lebedev family.

The Evening Standard explained the motivation for the move in a press statement:

"The Evening Standard and the Independent are both exploring ways to see how integration between them in a limited way can benefit all the papers owned by the Lebedevs. This is a constructive and useful way to maintain our high quality journalism and reduce costs in an economic climate which has hurt the whole newspaper industry."

However, combining desks means losing staff. Around 20 positions have been put at risk by this latest initiative, which has prompted the National Union of Journalists to propose a ballot for industrial action that will run from 21 November to 1 December.

Readers familiar with the British daily The Independent will notice something lacking from its pages after its most recent re-launch. According to Press Gazette's The Wire, The Independent no longer has its Monday Media Section. Instead, The Independent's media coverage is now scattered throughout the publication's new "viewspaper" section.

Eliminating the media section may come as a surprise to some. The recent buzz surrounding the launch of the iPad as well as the past year's media crisis would suggest that a media section is both important and relevant as media and technology become increasingly intertwined. However, The Guardian with their Media Guardian section now stands the only publication that devotes an entire section to developments in the media.

The Independent's re-launch has received mixed but mostly positive reviews. The most notable change to the paper is the inclusion of a 20 page "viewspaper" which is a new section that replaces traditional news with analysis and commentary. Peter preston from The Guardian's media blog described the paper as "stylish, cool and coherent," while others remain unconvinced or unhappy with the new changes.

Alexander Lebedev might not officially take over at the Independent for another month yet, but that hasn't stopped him from going about getting things the way he wants them at the title: the Guardian reported that the paper will unveil a new look from tomorrow, which is expected to include a new section comment and features section called Viewspaper.

The Independent's recent marketing and advertising campaign has funded the redesign - a project instigated by the Russian billionaire, as he seeks to turn the paper around and drive sales forward. Last month's circulation figures showed that sales of the paper were down 10% compared to the same period last year.

Simon Kelner, editor-in-chief, managing editor, and acting editor at the Independent, told the Guardian to expect a "radical redesign and overhaul", and said that he now has a marketing budget "in the millions" at his disposal, after former owner's INM were forced to trim it back to significantly.

Though Russian billionaire Alexander Lebedev only bought the Independent last month, and although ownership of the UK daily has not yet been passed to Lebedev's Independent Print Ltd., changes are already taking place in upper-level management of the paper. Roger Alton, editor of the Independent, announced his resignation on Friday via the Independent's website.

"I think it's right, following the sale of the paper to Alexander and Evgeny Lebedev, that the new owners should be free to appoint an editor of their own choosing," he said. Alton, who worked as editor of the paper for two years, went on to praise his colleagues for their talent and hard work and to predict that "under the ownership of the Lebedevs, the paper will go from strength to strength."

Simon Kelner, managing director of the publication, will act as interim editor to see the Independent through the elections, until Alton's replacement can be found. Dan Gledhill and Adam Leigh are to act as joint deputy editors, and the editor of the Independent on Sunday, John Mullen, will take a larger role in the integration of the daily and weekend papers.
