Dear Mario,

Reading your blog today (garciamedia.com), I spotted a June post I had missed: what your dream tablet conference in 2012 would look like. We have just finished the programming for the coming 5th Tablet and Apps Summit (October 30 in Frankfurt).

So I ran a checklist hoping you might agree with our topics and take “your dancing shoes” to our summit…

- We seem to agree that it’s necessary to “Rethink Media Apps on Mobile and Tablets”. What you call the next generation of news apps.

- We did not call it an iPad conference. The iPad is still the best. Our speakers from Stern magazine and GQ magazine will probably be with you on that. But from a publisher’s point of view, you need to stimulate the competition. So we have invited a Microsoft evangelist and two European publishers who have started to explore Windows 8 possibilities and tablets.

- We are looking at the wider meaning of mobile platforms. You would probably not recommend that. But we do think it’s important to understand usage in order to better serve tablets AND smartphones.

- We focus on two things that are of importance to you:

Hatched in the same laboratory as Siri, the voice-based assistant acquired by Apple, Trapit is a personalized search and discovery engine that runs on the premise that your love for your friends may not always extend to their taste in reading material.

“Personalization has become nothing more than a buzzword,” said Hank Nothhaft Jr, Chief Product Officer and Co-Founder of Trapit, which has been on the web since November, and unveiled its free iPad app today. “Personalization should be about you, the individual, and your unique tastes and interests, not about what your friends are buzzing about on Facebook and Twitter.”

Compared with other “personalized” news aggregators such as Flipboard, Trapit takes a distinctly antisocial approach to content discovery. Its goal is to capture the rich, long-tail content that is burrowing in hidden niches of the “deep web,” and serve it to you exactly as you like it, based on a thorough, algorithmic understanding your appetite (that we will get to in a moment).

One news app, three editions. This is the concept behind ABC’s News’ new app, which comes in three versions: morning, midday and evening.

Why the change? “We realized that people are using the app in different ways at different points of the day,” said ABC’s senior vice president of digital, Joe Ruffolo to Jeff Sonderman at Poynter

ABC News has had almost two years to observe how its audience is engaging with its content on the iPad, after launching its first iPad app in July 2010, as paidContent points out. The article says ABC News’ digital team found that iPad use peaks in the evening, between 7pm and 10pm, when users watched one and a half times more video, and read 20% more stories than at any other time of day. The team also found that half of all news stories consumed on the iPad were read in the morning and evening.

The first noticeable aspect of the release of Apple’s new iPad, announced yesterday at a launch event in San Francisco, is the fact that it’s called just that: “the new iPad,” rather than the iPad 3 or iPad HD. Why this is, is unclear – is it not sufficiently different to be an iPad3? Or has a decision on a name just not been taken?

The new device, to go on sale on March 16, has:

  • a ‘retina display’ of the type seen on the iPhone 4. For the iPad this means 3.1m pixels, 2048 x 1536 – double the resolution of previous versions.
  • a dual-core ‘A5X’ chip with quad-core graphics
  • 4G/LTE wireless, which is much faster than 3G but currently only available in the US
  • an upgraded iSight camera which has a 5 megapixel sensor and HD video recording capability.
  • voice dictation (in English, French, German and Japanese)
  • updated iWork applications, and iPhoto with more advanced editing options

It does not have haptic feedback, as commentators had predicted, notes the Guardian, or anything in particular that seems to justify the emphasis put on ‘touch’ in the invitation to the event.

The popular social newsreader Flipboard has announced that it's adding a new feature to its iPad app: Cover Stories.

Cover Stories, previously only available on Flipboard's mobile app, is a feature that picks links most likely to be relevant to users' interests based on what their friends are sharing and what they've previously read.

Daniel Terdiman at CNET writes that the feature learns from users' behaviour, so that the more they visit, the more relevant articles Flipboard can deliver. Terdiman quotes his colleague Rafe Needleman, who said that Cover Stories "did a good job of finding articles I didn't know about and that I would be interested in reading."

Storify, one of the best-known tools for creating narratives based on social media, announced the launch of its iPad application today, Mediabistro reported. The new app, which is available free on iTunes, is aimed at making on-the-go social media curation even easier than before.

Storify opened to the public less than a year ago, and it has since become well-used way for reporters to organise and present information drawn from social media. As online readers and social media users are faced with a constant flood of information, the need for curation - creating accessible narratives out of the social media content - is becoming increasingly acute.

The new iPad app offers the same basic functionalities as the Storify web app, with two major differences: the touch-enabled, "iPad-like" interface and the ability to send tweets from within the app.

USA Today is the latest paper to launch an app specifically for the Kindle Fire, Amazon's Android-powered tablet device that was launched at the end of September. The paper already has a general Android application for tablets, but seems to have deemed the device important enough to target directly.

The app features "a custom look and design specifically for the tablet" and provides "a convenient interactive package designed to take advantage of Kindle Fire's seven inch color touch screen," according to a press release from USA Today. The Fire runs on an older version of the Android OS than many new devices and has a very different user interface.

The app is available in Amazon's app store, which also boasts a Wall Street Journal Fire-specific app, as well as some Condé Nast titles. The Kindle Fire is already the second most popular tablet after the iPad and was projected to see a 13.8% market share in the last quarter of 2011, reported paidContent in December.

As 2012 draws ever nearer, speculation about the future of news in the next 12 months is rife. While changes in the year ahead are certain, newspapers haven't stopped innovating simply because the festive season is upon them.

The Sunday Times is preparing a Christmas day edition, the first in the paper's 190 year history, to be released on digital platforms, specifically the iPad and Android tablets. The edition will include interactive elements, such as quizzes and 'rub and reveal' pictures, and will be sponsored by retailer John Lewis so it can be given away as a free download.

The Sunday Times is not the only paper that is investing in digital strategies this Christmas time. Gannett has just purchased a raft of new equipment to enable its journalists to produce multimedia content with greater ease and speed. 'Thousands' of new iPhones and iPads have been bought by the company to equip journalists in making multimedia content and to facilitate news gathering.

Taking a bite of the Apple... Are there more rewards or dangers?

Apple certainly has a lot of offer new publishers, as Editor & Publisher notes in an article published today about Apple Newsstand.

The article by Tim Sohn reports that newspaper publishers are "raving" about the new portal, launched in October this year, which has given app download numbers a huge boost. According to Sohn, The New York Times has experienced a 429% increase in iPad app downloads and a 5,596% increase in iPhone app downloads since becoming part of Newsstand. The Metro UK app, available on Newsstand, has been downloaded 180,000 times since October 31, compared to an earlier app that was not part of Newsstand, which has been downloaded just 240,000 times since its launch in April 2010. The new app has also generated over 65,000 unique daily visitors and between 800,000 and 1 million page views for Metro UK's website.
