This amounts to almost one sixth of the newspaper's workforce.
<br /><br />The company employs 580 people, with half of these in the newsroom. Most of the cuts are expected to affect editorial staff, with more than a third of these set to go.
<br /><br />The newspaper reported losses of 97 million kronor, or around €10 million, last year. Despite this, union official <b>Hans Arbman</b> said that the cuts were unexpected.

<br /><br />Reporter <b>Marcus Stern</b> planned to use the football game, held yesterday, to spot members of Congress who were attending and figure out how they obtained their tickets. But since he knew that trying to contact 535 members of Congress would be too big a task for one person, he turned the investigation into a crowdsourcing effort and asked professional journalists and the public to help collaborate.

<br /><br />In the town of Salford, near Manchester, the council magazine <i>Life in Salford</i> competes with newspapers the<i> Salford Star</i> and <i>Salford Advertiser</i>. The Salford Star filed a freedom of information request to determine the cost of producing the council magazine. It determined that the council spends £27,797 per month, or an average of £333,564 per year.
<br /><br />By contrast, outside advertising income for the paper totaled just over £19,000 for eight issues.

<br /><br /><a href="http://www.ctmirror.org/"><i>The Connecticut Mirror</i></a> bills itself as "an independent source of news and information about our state's government, politics and public policy". It comes in time for an important state budget and an election year.
<br /><br />Editor <b>Michael Regan</b> writes that the <a href="http://www.ctmirror.org/page/guide-connecticut-politics-government">Guide to Politics and Government</a> his site offers provides "the most comprehensive information available any where on the state's elected officials".

In recent days, some have argued that journalists are <a href="http://www.editorsweblog.org/newspaper/2010/01/journalists_hindering_haiti_relief.php">doing more harm than good</a> in Haiti after the earthquake, putting more pressure on the already stretched resources there. By contrast, others have explained that <a href="http://www.editorsweblog.org/newspaper/2010/01/slate_explains_the_logistics_of_reportin.php">reporters are arriving equipped with all their supplies</a>, and that the <a href="http://www.editorsweblog.org/newsrooms_and_journalism/2010/01/communication_key_to_relief_effort_in_ha.php">need for information and communication is vital</a> in co-ordinating relief efforts.
<br /><br />But the <b>Society of Professional Journalists</b> (SPJ) has another concern. <a href="http://www.poynter.org/column.asp?id=45&aid=176402">It has issued a press release</a> cautioning journalists in Haiti to avoid becoming part of the stories that they are covering. Even in a time of crisis, it says, journalists have a responsibility to their audience to remain objective.

<br /><br /><b>Affiliated Media Inc.</b>, the privately held parent company for the publisher, expects to emerge from bankruptcy in one or two months. It has said that it has a deal with creditors to reduce its $930 million debt to $165 million. Lenders including <b>Bank of America</b> would get most of the company's stock, wiping out shareholders such as <b>Hearst Corp</b>. A bankruptcy court in Delaware still has to approve the plan.
