World Young Reader Prize June 15 deadline quickly approaching

The deadline for the 2009 World Young Reader Prize, this year with two new categories on offer, is 15 June. It is also the last date to get a discounted registration for the World Young Reader Conference being held in Prague, Czech Republic 27-30 September.

This annual award from the World Association of Newspapers (WAN) recognizes newspapers that do the most to develop young readership. WAN has added a special press freedom category for 2009 to honour newspapers that teach effectively about the fragility and importance of press freedom in a democratic society.

US: Knight News Challenge deadline November 1

The John S. and James L. Knight Foundation announces its third annual Knight News Challenge, a contest that will grant up to US$5 million for ideas that transform local community news with the help of digital tools like social media, Web 2.0 or multimedia content.

A new "incubator" site, the News Challenge Garage, was created in order to offer online criticism and advice for applicants.

"We have committed $25 million over five years to the Knight News Challenge because we believe in media innovation through experimentation," says Alberto Ibargüen, Knight Foundation's president and CEO. "Each winning project is an experiment with the potential to transform how we practice journalism in the digital age."

US: Knight Foundation to invest in online community news projects

Paid Content reports that the American Knight Foundation is prepared to grant up to $25 million to online community news ventures in the next five years, with the first $5 million to be dispensed in the first year. The Knight Brothers 21st Century News Challenge is accepting applications on its website from “individuals, organizations or businesses that can show their ideas will transform community life.” The deadline is December 1st of this year.
