Vendors shipped a record 54.5 million smartphones in the fourth quarter of 2009, 39% more than the 39.2 million shipped in the same quarter in 2008, according to IDC information on PC World.

Four of the top five smartphone sellers beat their shipments records for a single quarter, according to numbers released by the International Data Corporation (IDC). Following a 98% increase in smartphone sales in the fourth quarter of 2008, Apple has regained its spot as third largest smartphone vendor, behind longtime leaders Nokia and Research in Motion

The Wall Street Journal has announced a growth in its daily circulation with figures presented to the Audit Bureau of Circulations showing a 0.6% increase compared to the same six month period last year.  

The modest rise means the paper is now the top circulating U.S daily after previous number one, USA Today, recorded its worst year ever with a 17 percent drop in circulation.

Reuters reports that the success of The Wall Street Journal is a result of 'ongoing investment that Dow Jones has made in the franchise during the past few years. This growth combined with increased subscription rates has led to an increase in total circulation revenue of 10.1% to the Journal year-over-year.'

British broadsheets, the Telegraph and the Sunday Telegraph have seen their sales jump by a million in the past month, since the first release of the highly controversial MP expenses exclusive, according to industry indicators. 

Newspaper industry indicators predicting the official Audit Bureau of Circulations figures for May, released tomorrow, suggest that increased sales for the titles have continued to rise since the story first broke.  Sales are at 87,000 copies above the Daily Telegraph's regular rate.  The exclusive, entitled, the 'Expenses File' was first released on Friday 8 May. The story intrigued the British public throughout following month as further information was published episodically.

Consulting firm Deloitte has released a report showing that the 14-25 demographic watches a considerable amount less television than its older peers. Whereas Generation X (26-42) watches 19.2 hours of TV per week, the Millennial generation average a mere 10.5 hours in front of the boob tube. Still, this generation consumes the most media of any other demographic. Surprising figures? Not really.

With all of the interactive options Millennials have (video games, social media, mobile phones, MP3 players, etc.), sitting in front of a screen controlled by traditional "gatekeepers" seems less appealing. Getting their fingers dirty on newsprint that doesn't give the chance to talk back, even more so. Obviously, the trend of already declining newspaper circulations will only perpetuate as Millennials grow older and their grandparents pass-on.

But all is not negative for traditional media, whose audiences have never been bigger thanks to their Internet presence. The Bivings Group recently released a report indiciating that the large majority of newspapers are "getting it" on the Web, integrating social media and RSS, eliminating registration pages and opening their articles to reader comments.

An even brighter light shines on these promising developments when considering Internet ad spend. UK based-bank Barclay's released its US ad forecasts this week, expecting a 6.1% increase in Internet advertising. Although this rate is a huge drop from the 20-30% increases Internet advertising has been experiencing for several years, the global economic crisis combined with the fact that TV and newspaper advertising will drop 10% and 17% respectively means Internet-based companies can remain optimistic that ad revenues will continue to fill their coffers.

Of course, even increasing Internet revenues are not coming close to making up for lost ad revenues of media companies through traditional outlets. Content production and journalism in general are suffering because of massive staff layoffs. And perhaps to make things worse, Barclay's predicts that the bulk of Internet ad jump in 2009 will go to search, up 20%, compared with a 4% rise in display advertising. Some traditional media companies may not like it, but they're going to have to share more revenues with Google and the like. Still, that's not all bad. As they leave the paper on the doorstep and the TV off, most Millennials only find traditional media through Google to begin with, which may mean search engines are the only way traditional media houses will remain relevant.

According to chief executive Chris Boyd, the British Audit Bureau of Circulations (ABC) will not report combined figures for print and online readership.

The Audit Bureau of Circulation (ABC), the major US newspaper audit group, has announced plans to start counting online readership in addition to print circulation of US papers.

This morning brought news that further convinced bloggers of print’s demise; 30-year-old magazine InfoWorld confirmed rumors that the publication will become digital-only in April. Newspaper industry insiders, however, don’t agree.

The Newsroom Barometer also probed editors’ own predictions for the future of their newspapers and the newspaper industry. Again, unlike talks about news executives’ rigid conservatism, the study revealed editors were realistic in their assessment. Online will be the most common platform within 10 years, news will mostly be free, and opinion and in-depth commentary will increase in importance.

According to DMEurope, "The Audit Bureau of Circulations (ABC) for the UK and Ireland has announced rules to enable publishers to report digital editions on their existing ABC print certificates. While digital editions can now be reported on the print certificate, they cannot be included within the Average Net Circulation Figure. They will be reported separately. The rules include four principles that govern the auditing of digital editions." "These are:

• Opting in – all digital edition copies claimed must be ‘opted in’ i.e. the individual subscriber must have personally requested the copy

• Entitlement to copy – the audit will prove the entitlement of the subscriber for the publication i.e. verifying the paid subscription or free request documentation

• Availability of copy – ABC will check during the audit period that the correct publication and issue was available for download or view

• Notification of copy (some categories of free copies only) – the audit will include verification of the notification to the subscriber of the availability of a new digital edition.

The Audit Bureau of Circulations independently verifies circulation figures of newspapers and magazines to facilitate the buying and selling of advertising space in them.

Newspaper auctions are being adopted by increasing numbers of newspapers as an effective tool for generating alternative revenues. CityXpress Corp., provider of auctions for newspapers announces that the Fort Worth Star-Telegram and The Dallas Morning News will stage a cooperative online auction event in April 2004.
