Former editor of the Daily Mirror Piers Morgan said that all national newspapers will be free within 10 years, and his paper should be the kick-off to the transition, according to Press Gazette.

Roger Alton, editor of UK daily newspaper The Independent, said in an interview on Sky News Online that he takes responsibilty for the publication's declining economic situation. Alton also sttates that there are no plans to sell the newspaper in the future.

Alton goes on to say that the price increase startegy (from 80p to £1 in September) failed and pushed sales down further. The price rise made The Independent more expensive than other papers in the UK market, such as The Telegraph, The Guardian and The Times.

Free newspaper thelondonpaper, owned by News International, announces plans to pull out of the National Readership Survey (NRS). However, until a new chief executive is assigned, the decision will not be finalized.

News International's The London Lite, despite distributing 100,000 less copies than its rival thelondonpaper, is continuing to draw in more readers, according to statistics from the National Readership survey.

The associated-owned free paper has a lead in readership of 69,000 over thelondonpaper over the past year.

Free daily Metro has also seen an increase in readership while the paid-for London-Evening Standard has fallen 13%, according to the study.

24 Hours, a free newspaper in Cairo, was launched "some months ago, probably in March or April" of 2008, according to Newspaper Innovation.

The estimated circulation of Egypt's first free daily ranges from 15,000 to 50,000.  There are no official circul ation figures for newspapers in Egypt.

The daily's distribution has some direct delivery, although it mainly distributes through hawkers in various parts of Cairo handing copies out on the streets.

On October 30, Bhutan launched its first daily paper, Bhutan Today in an attempt to build a free press. 

Distribution of the eight-page paper will not be easy, it is expected to take up to a week for it to reach remote areas of the country.  The initial circulation will be around 18,00 copies.  It has been launched in English, however according to Bhutanese law, the paper must also be printed in the local language.

The Swiss free business daily CASHdaily relaunched today, October 21, under the new title CASH.  The paper has also been redesigned.

When the paper launched two years ago, the initial circulation was 75,000 copies.  As of today, daily circulation has increased to 98,000.

Another Swiss daily, ".ch" is also planning to relaunch with a new design and distribution system next week.

As part of a marketing deal with Warner Music, James Blunt will be the first guest editor of the free daily Metro International.  Blunt will be editing the global edition of MI on November 17.
In addition to editing, Blunt will work on a feature about the humanitarian organization, Médecins Sans Frontières.

To promote the special edition, there will be a one month campaign on radio, in print and online.  Blunt will be editing from the Rome office and starting October 20, readers can enter an online contest to be Blunt's "deputy" while he is editing.

For the past two years French free-daily, Ouest-France has been able to attract young readers and maintain high readership. 

According to Herve Barbot, Marketing Research & Development Manager at Ouest-France, "Many young people don't have newspapers at home, so they cannot read them even if they want. That's why we deliver our newspaper for free to schools and universities." 

The City Star of San Francisco recently launched a new design according to Newspaper Innovation.  The Star was launched in 2006 as a competitor of the Daily Post.

According to free-daily.com the new design looks a lot like that of the Daily Post.  The new nameplate is now four-inches wide, the same as the Daily Post.  The Star also has short teasers along the left hand column, same as the Daily Post.  In addition The Star has introduced a column of national news briefs, just like its competitor.

However, according to free-daily.com, The Star has not been able to attract as many readers nor pick up as much advertising as the Daily Post.

Russian publishing house Novosti Regionov has launched a weekly local paper Rodnoi Gorod in Volgograd. According to gipp.ru, this is the first media outlet in the region that offers readers both local news content as well as an internet counterpart, RodGor.ru. In addition, this is the first full-colour "thick" weekly to be published in Volgograd.

Dutch daily newspapers experienced lower circulation in the second quarter this year, according to the European Journalism Centre (EJC). Publisher PCM titles were "hit particularly hard."

The Dallas Morning News says that it will be making "strategic" changes to its free tabloid paper Quick, geared towards young adults, reports dallasnews.com. By the end of next month, Quick will focus entirely on entertainment and nightlife, instead of the current news extracts and entertainment stories. Furthermore, it will be published only on Thursdays, as opposed to five times a week.

Quick intends to increase circulation from 95,000 to 100,000 copies, half of which will be distributed to young adults living in apartment complexes and half of which will be available in stands around entertainment and retail venues. Extra door-to-door delivery is expected to start from 2009. In addition,

Quick may also become available on mobile platforms by the end of this year.

The Dallas morning News also launched Briefing, a "quick-read" newspaper, in August. The new paper is intended for 200,000 "upscale" homes that don't get traditional titles.

Pskov-City, a new free weekly regional paper was launched last Friday in Russia's Pskov area. The paper, published entirely in color, has an initial circulation of 20,000 copies, although it intends to increase the figure to 50,000.

According to gipp.ru, Pskov citizens from the age group 25-55 years who are educated, well paid and have active lifestyles are looking for a paper that focuses on their region.

Pskov-City is divided into sections like news, lifestyle, health, business, weekly TV program guides, celebrities and also features sections that are gender-specific.

Sing Tao News Corp, publisher of The Standard and Sing Tao Daily, lauded the free newspaper model on reporting its interim results today. Interim revenue jumped 13.6 percent to HK$1.21 billion, from HK$1.07 billion a year ago, thanks to the growth in advertising revenue of its Hong Kong publications.

"[The Standard] has adopted a free newspaper model since September 2007, under which circulation volume has grown to over 200,000 copies and new revenue sources have been opened up," the media conglomerate said in a statement.

The group's media operations saw revenue rise by 9.3 percent, boosted by advertising revenue growth at free Chinese newspaper Headline Daily that outperformed the market average.

Ukrainian daily newspaper Gazeta Po Kievski has announced that throughout September it will be distributing special issues throughout September for free in nearly 100 locations around the Kiev region. The free issue promotion will have an initial circulation of 220,000 copies.

The special editions of the paper will include coverage of events that may be "worrying" Kiev inhabitants as well as information about leisure activities and shopping, reported Marketing Media Review.

The first "special" issue, published on August 28, included announcements about upcoming concerts, the theatre, foreign recipes and finance articles.

The daily issue of the paper will continue to be published regularly and distributed at newsstands.
