In the last five months, Londoners have become used to freesheet distributors nagging them, at the start and end of each commute. The Guardian interviewed Stefan Hatfield, editor of the London Paper, about the ongoing rivalry and his view on free papers.

UK: Associated winning freesheet war, its Evening Standard suffering

ABC figures for September show that Associated Newspapers's free afternoon London Lite topped News International's thelondonpaper by a little over 30,000, distributing an average of 359,389 copies, not quite the 400,000 the paper produces every day. The paid-for Evening Standard took a huge hit from the influx of freesheets losing 7.6% of its already dwindling circulation.

London Lite is inching ahead of Thelondonpaper in London’s freesheet battle.  London Lite is reporting its distribution at 400,000, whereas Thelondonpaper has hit only 360,000.

The implications of introducing a new London afternoon freesheet might not seem that far reaching, but when Network Rail announces the winning tender for its distribution contract in two weeks, even Britain’s national newspapers could get caught up in the soon-to-be-surging free paper competition.
